Pass-through digital wallets don’t retain payment credentials but rather pass tokenized card credentials directly from the consumer to the merchant, card issuer and card network. Examples: Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. These are often accessed via Near-Field Communication (NFC) tap/contactless technology or via in-app transactions, browser-based payments, or Pay Buttons. 248 249

Scorecard Summary Pass-through digital wallets are widely accepted, but not quite on par with traditional card payments. The requirement of a user to have access to the device the digital wallet is on and most commonly some biometric authentication provides an additional layer of security. Given the nature of pass-through digital wallets, other characteristics like governance and cost are dependent on the underlying payment method, typically cards. The user experience has a slight advantage over card payments because of its high global consumer usage in the online environment.
