Graph 4.3 – Payment Methods by Transaction Value in the Americas (2022) 127
Graph 4.4 –Payment Methods by Transaction Value in Europe and the Middle East (2022) 128
Section 4.1.2 – Payments Mix in Europe and the Middle East Europe and the Middle East have some of the world’s most diverse payments landscapes. The most prominent payment method in the region is card. Debit card spending continues to trump credit card spend overall, although credit has a larger share for Ecommerce transactions in many countries (see Section 4.2). Cash continues to decline, although it remains the largest POS payment method in Spain and Germany. In the UK, France and the Netherlands, cash spending has declined dramatically to the point where it is barely 10% of POS spend (see Section 4.3) Ecommerce spending in the EMEA region is highly varied, with A2A, digital wallets, BNPL and card all seeing significant market shares across the region. The European Commission’s PSD2 regulation has influenced a rising utilization of A2A and Open Banking Payments (see Section 4.4)
Section 4.1.3 – Payments Mix in Asia-Pacific APAC is the only region covered by this report not to be card dominated. Although card payments still have a strong presence in South Korea and Australia, they are not the leading payment method elsewhere (see Section 4.2). Cash spending remains strong in Indonesia and Japan, where it constitutes more than 40% of POS spend. However, cash is on the decline in the region and many APAC countries have “cashless” digitalization programs in place (see Section 4.3). APAC remains a leader in A2A payment adoption. Digital wallets are the leading payment method in many APAC countries, including China and India. In contrast to other regions, digital wallets in APAC have seen success in the POS as well as the Ecommerce space (see Section 4.4).
