Section 2.3.2 – Card Networks in EMEA

There are several domestic debit networks in the Americas, including the likes of NYCE, PULSE, STAR, Accel and SHAZAM in the U.S., Interac in Canada and Elo in Brazil. However, most credit card markets in the region are dominated by Visa, Mastercard and Amex. In the U.S., local debit networks have a combined market share of 13% 74 , which is comparatively low due to the large card market (see Section 4.1) exacerbated by some PINless debit accessibility and availability challenges (see Section 5.2). Brazil’s local network Elo has a similar market share at 14%. Canada’s local debit network Interac has a significant market share of 27%, despite the large credit card market in Canada and Interac’s historic lack of CNP availability. Mexico does not have a local debit network, and as a result the two largest networks Visa and Mastercard have a combined 79% market share.

Canada and U.S. from Euromonitor 2022. Chile, Mexico, and Brazil from Euromonitor 2021. 74 Please note this does not count U.S. domestic debit networks Interlink, which is owned by Visa, and Maestro, which is owned by Mastercard
